RIMT School of Legal Studies Marks Labour Day with Panel Discussion on New Labour Codes
On the occasion of International Labour Day, the RIMT School of Legal Studies organized a panel discussion on the topic “Contemporary Legal Challenges and Emerging Trends in Law: Special Reference to the New Labour Codes.” The event was organized with the objective of creating awareness and encouraging critical discourse on recent reforms in labour laws and their impact on labour welfare and industrial relations.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Dean, Legal Studies, who emphasized the relevance of Labour Day in upholding workers’ rights and highlighted the need for understanding labour law reforms in the context of changing socio-economic and industrial realities.
The panel discussion featured eminent experts in the field of labour law, including Sh. Dharam Pal Angrish, President, Punjab Trade Union Federation and a service matter expert; Dr. Shiva Satish Sharda, Assistant Professor, Rajiv Gandhi National Law University, Patiala; and Dr. Rupinder Kaur, Assistant Professor, Punjab University, Chandigarh. The panelists shared their academic and practical insights on the evolution of labour jurisprudence in India.
The speakers deliberated on the four labour codes – Code on Wages, 2019; Industrial Relations Code, 2020; Code on Social Security, 2020; and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020—and discussed contemporary legal challenges related to their implementation. Issues such as workers’ welfare, industrial harmony, social security, protection of unorganized and gig workers, and the balance between employers’ flexibility and employees’ rights were critically examined.
An interactive session followed, during which students actively participated and raised relevant questions on labour rights, employment security, and emerging career opportunities in labour law. The panelists encouraged students to engage in legal research and advocacy to strengthen social justice mechanisms.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the Director, Dr. Jyoti Angrish, who expressed gratitude to the esteemed panelists, faculty members, and students for their participation and valuable contributions. She reaffirmed RIMT’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, legal awareness, and social responsibility. The panel discussion marked a meaningful observance of Labour Day and underscored the importance of informed legal dialogue on contemporary labour issues.
