Programme Structure
The M.A. in English is a two-year postgraduate program structured into four semesters and comprising a total of sixteen papers. At the beginning of each academic session, English Department will announce available course options based on faculty and institutional resources. Semester I includes four compulsory papers (Paper I–IV), while Semester-II consists of two compulsory papers (Paper V & VI) and two optional papers (Paper VII & VIII), each offering three choices. Students must select one paper from each optional cluster. Similarly, Semesters III and IV each have four papers, with one compulsory paper (Paper IX in Semester-III and Paper XIII in Semester-IV) and three optional papers in each, grouped into clusters (Papers X, XI, XII and Papers XIV, XV, XVI respectively). Students are required to choose one paper from each cluster. For academic consistency and specialization, students are encouraged to select corresponding optional papers across semesters—for example, choosing ‘Academic Writing –II’ if ‘Academic Writing –I’ was taken earlier. Additionally, students who opt for ‘Research Methodology’ in Semester-III must undertake a mandatory ‘Dissertation Work’ in Semester-IV. Each paper involves five hours of direct instruction per week, ensuring comprehensive engagement with the curriculum.
