B.Sc. (Hons) Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. This programme will give you a solid grounding in all aspects of microbiology, enabling you to become a highly adaptable employee, capable of working in a variety of settings including academia, industry and government. Genome sequencing is revolutionizing our understanding of micro-organisms, and you’ll discover how molecular techniques have allowed the development of profound knowledge of gene function and gene regulation in microbes. In addition to learning about the importance of microbes as agents of disease, you will also study microbial physiology and genetics and their applications in the production of antibiotics, chemicals, pharmaceutical products and vaccines.

The degree programme is modular. This 3 year full-time course is divided into 6 semesters. The methods of assessment vary widely to suit the nature of the course unit and each level of study.

The many transferable skills that they gain during studies ensure that they are suitable for a wide variety of science careers, whether one wants to be a laboratory-based research scientist or a science journalist.
