M. Tech - Mechanical Engineering is a postgraduate Mechanical Engineering course. It is a two years specialisation programme that deals with the study of mechanics, statics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis used in designing, development, construction, production, installation, operation and maintenance of tools, machines and various other mechanical equipment such as automobiles, trucks, airplanes, trains, space vehicles, lathes, milling machines, grinders, large steam and gas turbines, components of thermal power stations, internal combustion engines, jet engines, air conditioning and heating machines, refrigerators etc. In short, this degree course mainly focuses on the study of application of the principles of mechanics and energy to the design of machines and devices.
The 2 years programme is spread across 4 semesters. Mechanical Engineering involves design, development and upgradation of products, systems and processes in every walk of human life.
M. Tech - Mechanical Engineering degree can be applied in all other fields of engineering and so demand for a Mechanical Engineer is high compared to other engineers of different fields, so it serves as an all-purpose engineering degree. It is to be noted that out of the millions of engineers employed by companies, 30% of them are mechanical engineers. Students can always look for a career in related occupations such as aerospace engineer, aeronautical engineer, automotive engineer, architect, nuclear engineer, tool designer, and many other occupations. • The new developing fields of biotechnology, materials science and nanotechnology will open up various new job areas for Mechanical Engineers. • In few of the western countries, mechanical engineering is the second highest paid profession after medicine. Employment Areas are Aeronautical Industry, Agricultural Industry, Automobile Industry, Chemical Industry, Construction Firms, Consulting Firms, Electronics Industry, Hotels, Hospitals, Hotels • Hospitals, Industrial Machinery industry, Oil Exploration and Refining, Petroleum Industry, Power Plants, Steel Plants and Textile Industries. Typical job profiles are Mechanical Engineering Technicians, Professors/Associate Profs/Asst. Profs, Project Managers - Mechanical Engineering, Technical Writers (Machines) - Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Managers - Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineers - Production Engineering, Detailed Engineering – Mechanical, Mechanical Production Engineers, Section Heads - Cost Engineering (Mechanical) and• Mechanical Engineers – Infrastructure.
