B.Tech - Structural Engineering

Candidates having a special interest in the structural aspect of civil engineering may opt for this course. Structural engineers are required to make sure that the construction is structurally sound and reliable. Skills in material sciences and mathematics are an advantage for aspiring candidates.

Eligibility and admission

Passed 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational subject.

Obtained at least 45% marks (40% in case of candidate belonging to reserved category) in the above subjects taken together.

The duration of the course is four years spread across eight semesters. It includes advanced finite element analysis, structural mechanics, structural dynamics, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete, steel structures, tall buildings and towers, construction designs resistant to wind and earthquakes ensuring structural reliability along with computer applications in structural engineering.

Structural engineers design the framework of buildings, pipelines, bridges, and such constructions so that these constructions can support their own weight and resist external forces such as weather and traffic. In addition to public safety concerns, structural engineers must also take into account factors of aesthetics and cost efficiency. They often specialize in the types of structures they design and may work on projects ranging from nuclear power plants to hotels.
